The official name of Ginkakuji Temple is Jishouji Temple.
It was originally built as the villa of Ashikaga Yoshimasa,
the 8th shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate.
One of the highlights is the Kannon Hall, which is called Ginkaku.
There was a theory that it was decorated with silver foil,
but such traces have not been found.
The garden in front of the Ginkyo-den is a scenic spot designated
as a Special Historic Site and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty,
and is said to have been modeled after the garden of Saihoji Temple.
