Kyoto’s Big Summer Event! Gozan-no-Okuribi

2022年8月4日
The Gion Festival is over, and the next big event in Kyoto is the "Gozan-no-Okuribi" (Farewell fire)!

The "Gozan-no-Okuribi" (Farewell fire), held every year on August 16, is one of the most popular traditional summer events in Kyoto. It has the meaning of "sending off the spirits of the dead," and five mountains surrounding Kyoto City are lit on fire.

The five mountains are lit and the following Kanji characters can be seen from a distance!

-Nyoigatake (Mt. Higashi) "Daimonji
-Nishi and Higashiyama Matsukazaki "Myoho
-Nishi Kamo Funayama "Funagata
-Daikokuyama (Mt. Daimonji) "Left Daimonji
-Sen'oji Temple in Kamisaga: "Torii-gata

I'm from Kyoto too, and I go to see it every year from my grandma's house!

It's so interesting to see the letters float up the mountain!

You can see the bonfire from Kyoto Kitashirakawa house, Kyoto Jingu-marutamachi house, and Kyoto Taisyogun house!

The current residents are planning to watch it together, and everyone is looking forward to it!

Please check out our blog about Gozan-no-Okuribi in the past :)

Which character will you go to see this year?
