The other day, while cleaning a certain share house, a resident approached me saying they needed to issue some documents but didn't know how to obtain them. I also didn't know the procedure for getting those documents, so I first called the relevant office to confirm the process and then explained it to the resident to assist them.
The place where the documents were issued didn't have any staff who could handle English, and they said they would use translation via an iPad or similar device.
It made me wonder if English support just isn't keeping up with the growing number of international students and workers each year. But then again, if it's just about conveying information rather than communication, maybe machine translation is perfectly fine.
By the way, that resident gave me some sweets as a thank-you for helping her. But I couldn't quite understand her English description of the sweets, so I ended up relying on the translation function myself 😅
